Places to Explore
This map is meant to be a resource as you explore the outdoors. As the data on the map continues to grow, I’ll add National Park, State Parks, County Parks, State Natural Areas and other locations that a naturalist may want to enjoy, while at the same time I’ll be adding interesting photography locations for those, who like myself, like to shoot old buildings and urban scenes as well. With the use of the drop down menu, the maps filtering options may be customized to your interests. If you’d like to help the data grow, drop me a note. It would be awesome to have the data grow quickly and expand across the country!
Definition of locations:
Birding Site – Though the activity of birdwatching can be enjoyed anywhere, these sites represent the best of the best. Keep in mind that birding is a seasonal activity. A location that might be exceptional during spring migration might be boring during breeding season or winter.
Lighthouses – They are what they are, lighthouses. Some may be on private property but provide good views and photo taking opportunities via land and/or boat.
National Wildlife Refuge – Areas owned and managed on a federal level. These are often substantial areas of habitat and can provide exceptional photographic and nature viewing opportunities. Keep in mind that there may be some areas of National Wildlife Refuges closed to the public at any time.
Nature Study and Observation – A place that provides the peace and quiet and enough habitat that exploring for birds, butterflies, wildflowers, dragonflies, etc. can be productive and comfortably enjoyed.
Photographic Point of Interest – A place that you’d drive by or through that screams “take my picture”!
State Park/State Forest – A piece of state owned land that provides public access for rest and relaxation. Most provide excellent nature viewing opportunities but some state parks in particular are preserved more for historical value.
Waterfalls – Locations of waterfalls, both natural and man made, where one can enjoy the soothing sights and sounds of water falling.
