I’m not sure the reason why myself and many others find Tiger Beetles to be rather fascinating animals. At 1/2″ to 3/4″ long, they’re rather hard to find and you really have to be paying attention to find them. Once you find them, it’s not easy getting close enough for a photo. Typically you use macro equipment and attempt to get within a foot or so. I imagine you could try using a close focusing telephoto lens but I haven’t had much luck with that yet. There are a little over 100 species of Tiger Beetle in the United States. I’ve seen a small fraction of them but sure hope to add more as I learn more about them and encounter them in my travels.
